For anyone interested, though it technically doesn't belong in this section:

The absolute marking scheme varies by subject, but the most commonly used one is as follows: 25% Midterm Exam + 25% Final Exam + 50% best x out of x+2 or x+4, whatever class tests (eg. best 3 out of 5 for Signals and Systems, 6 out of 10 for Algorithms, 3 out of 8 for Math, etc). After this, the students' total marks are ranked, then divided into 9 letter grade categories: A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, D, F. of which D is the minimum passing grade (getting an F would mean that you'd have to retake the exam for that subject). The division is asymmetric, and up to the professor handling the course. Each of these letter grades has a corresponding numeric value (A: 4, A-:3.5 ... C:2, D:1, F:0) which is then multiplied by the credits for that course (important course = high credits) to get the grade points for that subject. Finally, the grade point average is the number of grade points obtained divided by the total number of grade points obtainable for that set of subjects (max GPA is 4).
A GPA of <2.4 would require you to come back to college during the vacations and retake the exams for all the subjects.
A GPA of <2.0 would mean that you'd have to repeat the entire year.
